The Recipe for Success
Is there such a thing as a recipe for success? A recipe that when followed would guarantee profound results?
Believe it or not, the answer is YES!
You may ask, “If such a recipe exists, then how come I have never heard of it? And why doesn’t everyone follow it?”
The answer to these questions is that yes, you have seen it. And there are many who attempt to follow it. But as with most recipes, it needs to be followed with precision. If not, the results are rarely what were intended.
This recipe is the distilled sum of all personal development. It is nothing new. The concepts have been scribed by mentors and teachers throughout the history. They go back to the earliest manuscripts and scriptures penned by humanity.
In my study of personal development, I have found four distinct ingredients. Each one alone may have some impact on your life. You may get some results. But they may be short-lived and soon you’ll find yourself doing the same things and getting the same outcomes you have always had. However, combining all four of these ingredients as instructed has proven to be the recipe to create the life you would love to live.
It applies to business and career, personal life, health, community involvement, and anywhere you would want to make a change for the better. It has been time-tested and proven to be effective. Any book or podcast on personal development will touch on at least one of the steps in the recipe.
Rather than make you click-to-skip or scroll to the recipe, here it is:
Ingredients:
- Know what you want
- Believe you can have it, and deserve it
- Trust that it will all work out
- Do something
Preparation:
- Combine all four ingredients in equal proportion.
- Continue combining them consistently and frequently over time.
- Check for doneness by the results you get.
To explain how the recipe works, let’s look first at the ingredients. And as you read on, remember to keep the metaphor of a recipe in mind. Compromising any ingredient or preparation step will probably have adverse results.
Know what you want
Easy enough, right? Most of us want the same things; more money, better health, fulfilling relationships, a deeper spiritual connection.
It’s not a very long list. Yet the details behind each are as vast. We each are different. And we all have needs we want met.
It is important to take some time to dream about why it is you want this change in your life. Visualize the ideal scenario. What would you be doing? Who would you be with? Where would you live? And most importantly, how would you feel if you had it? You’ll know your vision is clear when it stirs a heart-felt emotional satisfaction. There will be no question as to why you want this.
How this ingredient is compromised
Being vague. As mentioned, we all want the basic things; more money, better health, fulfilling relationships, a deeper spiritual connection. Look at each of the adjectives – more, better, fulfilling, deeper. More money could be a penny found in the parking lot. Better health could be a miniscule improvement to a vital statistic. What does a fulfilling relationship look like? How will you know you have a deeper spiritual connection?
It is important to be specific as to what it is you want. Write it out clear and concise. It needs to be so simple an eight-year-old child can understand it. Why is it you want this need fulfilled? What does your life look like when you succeed in getting the money, health, relationship and connection you desire? Crystal clarity is important here.
Another way you can sabotage this ingredient is by focusing on what you don’t want. For example, paying off debt, getting off medications, stop dating losers. And it is easy to do, focus on eliminating the things you don’t want. You have a lot of emotion fueling the charge. The detriment is that you’ll most likely create more of the same, so that you have the opportunity to get rid of it. More money to pay off debt? You’ll acquire more debt to pay off. Improve your health by not being as ill? You’ll find new maladies you need to cure.
Be very specific and precise in the life you want to live. This is simply an exercise in dreaming without limitations. Take a look at those who you appreciate, maybe even envy. What is the vision you have of their life? And how would it feel to have that life whether imagined or real?
One more thing… if you don’t get what you want right away it may be because one of the other ingredients is being compromised.
Believe you can have it, and deserve it
The key to this ingredient is truly believing anything is possible There are countless examples of those who can go from broke to millions within a few days or weeks. Or miraculous recoveries from illness. People in joyous relationships.
Surround yourself with inspirational stories of common people getting profound results. They are everywhere. Shift your algorithm from media that focuses on life’s woes to those of victory.
And if you question whether you deserve it, just remember you do. It is your life and responsibility to be happy, joyous and content.
How this ingredient is compromised
Sometimes I struggle with this myself. It is easy for me to dream of what I want and get crystal clear in describing it.
Then comes the definitive test. Do I believe this is possible? Or, do I believe I deserve it?
There are many examples that prove it is possible to achieve the life we want. It is much easier to focus our attention on news stories, books, movies and media that prove life is full of disappointments. It makes you feel better to know your life isn’t as bad. Strive each day to focus on encouraging, inspirational stories in the media. Read books on the power of belief and the power of self-worth.
It will be uncomfortable. At least at first. And you will want to give in, because it is uncomfortable. But what good is a crystal-clear vision if you don’t believe it is possible?
Trust it will all work out
Believe it or not, the universe, or God, or quantum physics is conspiring for you, not against you. There is a level of trust you must have that everything will work out. Maybe not as planned. But have faith. It can work out.
As with belief, you must immerse yourself in a positive environment. Everything you read, those you associate with, the media you listen to all must fuel your feelings of possibility and solutions.
Your intention must be clear. Knowing what you want and truly believing you can have and deserve it is paramount in surrendering to this power. Trusting it will all work out is a matter of faith. Pray not for what you want, but to trust the energy of life is in your corner ready and willing to help you get what you want. Or as is penned by many, “trust the process.”
How this ingredient is compromised
When you are not getting the results you want, it is easy to stop trusting that everything will be fine. With further examination, you may find that one of the other ingredients – knowing exactly what you want, believing in yourself, or taking action – may need attention. It can be difficult to continue a positive attitude when things are not going your way. That is why this ingredient is part of the recipe. As important as the other three, trusting things will work out gives you the chance to have a different perspective.
Another way to misunderstand this part of the recipe is to have an expectation of the process to get what you want. And then disappointed when things do not go as planned. This is not a time to give up or lose faith. You are being presented a fork in the road, another path to take to get you to your destination.
Often, the solutions and paths in your journey to create a fulfilled life are not what you envisioned. That is because your vision is heavily influenced by the life you are now living, and not by the life you want. When life throws you a twist, go with it. Look for the opportunities and lessons to be learned. It is part of trusting the process.
Take action
Or simply put, do something. The life you want will not be handed to you. You have a part in making it happen.
There are two realms to life – the physical and the metaphysical. Metaphysical cannot be seen, touched, smelled, tasted or heard. Your dreams, belief and faith reside here. The life you want begins here in the metaphysical realm. But to be brought into reality, the physical realm, it needs you to take action. It does not happen automatically.
With clear intention, belief and faith, opportunities will present themselves. Swift and confident action on these opportunities are rewarded with more.
How this ingredient is compromised
The obvious reason why this ingredient is misused is by doing nothing, or very little. But there is another way this ingredient is misused. That is by taking inappropriate action. This happens when your vision is unclear, or you lack belief or faith in your vision. A good test to see if you are taking inappropriate action is to ask, “is this the same way I always do it?” I am sure you have heard about the pitfalls of doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results. Use the power of trusting all will work out and go after your dreams in a way you have never done before.
Another way the action step is compromised is by disillusion. That is, thinking you are taking action when in reality you are not. Being busy instead of being productive. Are the actions you are taking today moving you closer to your goal? It is all about the decisions you make and the actions you take today. They must be in alignment with the results you wish to create. And a clear vision, belief in yourself and faith will help you take meaningful action.
Making the Recipe for Success Work for You
As with any recipe, the preparation instructions are just as important as the ingredients. You must continue to mix these ingredients in equal proportions over time. If you are not getting the results you want, look at the four ingredients of the recipe; know what you want, believe you can have it, trust the process, and take action. Is there one (or more) that is not getting the attention it deserves? Are your being honest with yourself?
There will always be results in the choices you make. It is up to you to look at those results to see if they are leading you to what you want. And if not, change something.
